The success of “Rhapsody in Blue” made George Gershwin famous everywhere in the world.
Later on, Gershwin used a work by DuBose Howard to write an opera, “Porgy and Bess,” a tragic love story about African Americans who lived along the shores of South Carolina. This work had its debut in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1935. It was very popular with the public, but it confused the critics, for whom it was something unique that they did not know how to evaluate, an opera inspired by the popular culture of that era. Gershwin did not care at all about the confusion of the critics. He believed that the best music that he had composed up to then was in “Porgy and Bess.”
Another of Gershwin’s famous works is “An American in Paris,” a musical poem as innovative as the works of Maurice Ravel. The debut of this work was by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in 1928. American music critics did not know how to evaluate it. Some admired it; others hated it.
Ravel, however, loved Gershwin’s music. At one point in his career Gershwin wanted some tutoring in musical technique from Ravel. Ravel turned him down. “Why do you want to become a second-rate Ravel,” he said to Gershwin, “when you are already a first-rate Gershwin?”
Gershwin died in 1937 from a brain tumor while only thirty-nine years old. His death provoked attention in the world media of that time that was similar to the response given to the recent death of Michael Jackson.
The Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg, like Maurice Ravel, greatly admired Gershwin’s music. He said that Gershwin was a composer that lived in music and expressed a universe of important concepts in his music because music was his native language.
