Duvalier says he expects a quick resolution to the political crisis in Haiti.

The former de facto ruler of Haiti, Jean-Claude Duvalier, called for national reconciliation since the time he returned to Haiti from France after twenty-five years in exile, saying that he wanted to express his profound sadness to his compatriots who say they have been victims of his government.

At the same time, a former United Nations spokesman, Michele Montas, and three other Haitians who were imprisoned during 1971 and 1986, during Duvalier’s regime, filed suit against him for arbitrary detention, destruction of private property, torture and violation of civil and political rights.

Duvalier has also been formally accused of stealing huge amounts of Haiti’s public funds.

Despite all this, one of his lawyers said that Duvalier is planning to stay in Haiti and could also get involved in politics.

Most observers of social conditions in Haiti, however, believe that Duvalier’s presence in the country will worsen the political and social crisis in Haiti, provoking even greater social instability and serious rioting in the country.
