The man in charge of rescuing the Chilean miners contradicts statements made by Obama in his State of the Union address.

In his annual address to Congress, Obama emphasized the participation of the engineer Brandon Fisher and his company, Center Rock, Inc., in the operation that rescued the thirty-three men who had been trapped for nearly seventy days in a mine in Chile.

In statements published by the Chilean newspaper “El Mercurio,” André Sougarret, the head of the rescue operation appointed by the president of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, denied that Fisher played an important role.

“Though his whole team participated in a way that enabled us to be finally successful, the belief that they alone were the participants in this project does not seem correct to me,” said the Chilean engineer.

Sougarret added that Fisher and his company did not design “Plan B” but only furnished the hammers that were used in the drill that finally reached the miners.

“What they did was to make available to us a single technique, and there were others”, he said. “His was not the only one. That’s why it was called ‘Plan B’. Plans A and C continued their operations.”

Sougarret also said that Fisher did not donate his services completely out of philanthropic motives but received $100.000 for the use of his drilling hammers.

Meanwhile, the miners stayed away from the controversy. They traveled to Orlando, Florida, where they were invited to Disney World by the company’s chief executive, Bob Iger.

Some of the rescue workers who participated in the operation, 700 feet deep also joined the program.

The thirty-three miners are expected to meet with Obama in March during his trip to Chile as part of his Latin American tour that he announced during his recent State of the Union message.
